A Pen Pal + Cupcake Break

For whatever simple or nostalgic reason, I'm a huge fan of mail. Anything from a magazine to an invitation gets me excited and curious about what is inside. It's like an unexpected gift. During a week when my stress levels are going berserk (I've had pretty realistic nightmares three nights in a row) a letter in the mail from my sweet pen pal Kim was exactly what I needed. Kim is an art student in London so I was immediately giddy to see the Queen's silhouette on the postage. ;-)

So, I decided to push my books aside for a minute and enjoy the letter. I love the postcard and her lion drawings so much! Earlier that afternoon I picked up a red velvet cupcake from Sprinkles because...I wanted one. Haha. I haven't been there in forever and I am trying to appreciate Dallas while I can before school is over. I'm not leaving Dallas forever, but who knows where I will end up when I graduate! I'm trying my best to seize the day! Or seize the cupcake at least. ;)

There's nothing like a cupcake and a letter from a far away friend to take your mind away from reality, even if it's only for a moment.

I hope you are all having a great week. Do you have any pen pals or other fun ways to take your mind off what stresses you out?

  1. Yeah, I'm a big fan of Sprinkles. I feel deprived not having one near Indianapolis. I visited a couple while in Chicago recently and I sure do miss it!

  2. Usually a good bike ride takes my mind off of things. But cupcakes work too!

  3. Oh wow! That is great that you keep the traditional way of sending messages. I actually love being pen pals, despite the fact that I have none. Can you, by any chance, tell me the story of how you started this lovely habit? How did you meet Kim? And how did you both decide to become pen pals?

    1. We met through blogging early last year and developed an online friendship. Kim suggested we should become pen pals a few months ago! :)

  4. A couple of my university friends and I agreed back when we graduated that we'd write to each other and it is so lovely to read all about each other's lives and fulfilled dreams in a letter, rather than just seeing a facebook update!! =)

  5. I'm particularily fond of Jane Austen and mindless games if solitaire when I'm stressed out. But that cupcake looks like it would do th trick too. Hope your stress level comes down soon!

  8. I absolutely love letters too! One of my favorite things to collect is pretty stationary. I wrote this post when I studied in England for a few months to express my love for mail :) http://esthermcarrera.blogspot.com/2010/11/little-things.html
There is nothing like receiving a hand written sentiment to brighten up your day. xo

  9. I love the idea of pen pals. The hand-written word is so beautiful. I fear the day technology takes over us. How did you find a pen pal? Id love to have one myself.

  11. I've had pen pals since 6th grade, and in my mid-30's still do. I still write to 3 ladies from Germany (Germans are great letter writers) and a lady from Portugal (I'm Australian). Even though I might only receive 1 or 2 letters from them a year (we all have families now), it's nice to see that some one has taken the time to sit down and write to you.

  12. I, too, would love pen pal! How did you connect with Kim? Is there a secret penpal society out there? Do tell! :) On the brighter side, the stress is almost over. Soon you'll be done. I keep telling myself only three more weeks, but I'm so tired of essays. I just want to knit!

  18. I want a pen pal, too! I used to have heaps when I was a teenager.

Every so often my friend Lola gets it into her head to send me postcards, though, and they never fail to cheer me up.

  19. I sent my best friend a typewritten letter about 6 months ago, I just wanted to say hi to her, I guess she thought it was sweet and posted a pic of it on Facebook with the caption'love letter' hahaha. I have just bought some self-adhesive mail from Cath Kidston and I plan on sending her some more letters. I love to hand write letters, the recipient can carry them around like mementos if they wish. I wish I could have more pen pals, seems exciting!

  20. I received a hand written letter a few years ago, and for a moment I just stood there holding it - not really sure what to do with it...

I used to have penpals when I was a kid, when slow was considered the natural pace.

I now have a penpal (although we write eachother via emails) that I met some years ago. I bought a knitting pattern from her, we started talking and now we are like sisters!

    Writing is good.

    Have a nice one, dear! : )

  21. And speaking of mail - and art... check out this site; it's a group of people exchanging stitched envelopes! They are like little pieces of art, and yet both stamped and sent my the mail!

The only one I'm still in contact with is Tone, although we Facebook now, too...but we still send things to each other through the mail....and I'm a "package" pal with Fiona in Arizona...This started a couple years ago and every once in awhile, we send each other unexpected gifts...I'm due to send one to her....And I'd love another penpal, so if anyone is interested email me or visit my blog...

  25. Oh, how wonderful! A letter and a cupcake sounds like a lovely break from all the busy-ness and stress.

...I don't have any penpals currently, but I used to write a letters a lot during grade school. And, actually, that is how I met my now-husband. I was a penpal with his mother during seventh grade (she is my writing mentor), and later that year I started writing to her son as well. (His first letter to me started off with the line: "My mother is making me write this letter.") Since he and I are now married, the rest, as they say, is history. :D

Thank you, thank you, for sharing such lovely things!
